Green Glass Demijohn
These French demijohns are all similar, but unique, each. Used for fermentation, the tops of these containers have been removed when the liquid was poured out. From Wikipedia, “Demijohn presumably comes from the French dame-jeanne, literally “Lady Jane”, as a popular appellation; this word is first attested in France in the 17th century. An alternative etymology derives it from the name of a Persian town, Damghan, but there is no evidence for this.”
All of these demijohns are green glass, though the green can vary slightly. Approximate size below. Each Demijohn has now been fitted with a cork, please see detail photograph.
