Square Topped Sandstone Staddle Stone

Staddle is derived from the Old English word “stathol” which means base. Staddle stones were used as supporting bases for granaries, hay ricks, beehives and game larders. Elevating the grain or other edible provided air circulation and discouraged small animals from getting in. In the United States, Staddle Stones were often used as property boundary markers. This uniquely shaped pair of square topped sandstone stones are available individually or as a set. Well weathered and consistent patina. English in origin. Tops measure approx. 21 x 21″ and 21 x 15″, base is 16 x 17″ at the bottom and overall height is 30″ (left) and 32″ (right)
